Big Buddha of Phuket

The Big Buddha in Phuket is an iconic statue and one of the major tourist attractions. The icon that stands 45 meters tall and sits atop of the Nakkerd Hills between Chalong Bay and Kata. Owing to its height, the statue is visible to people from Phut Town and Karon Beach.

 

From the top of this point, tourists can enjoy a 360-degree view of the island’s Phuket Town, Kata, Karon, and many more places. Tourists can experience a peaceful atmosphere with only sounds that come from the fluttering of Buddhist flags and bells apart from the soft dharma music.

 

The Big Buddha Statue

Locally known as the Phra Puttamingmongkol Akenakkiri Buddha, the base of this statue is about 25 meters wide, made of reinforced concrete and beautiful Burmese white jade marbles. The white idol shines under the sun giving a spectacular view to onlookers.

Next to the Great Buddha in Phuket, there is a smaller gold-colored statue but actually made of tonnes of brass, along with smaller Buddha statues and of revered monks.

 

Thousands of tourists visit the site every month and leave touching messages for their deceased loved ones on the bricks and white marbles slabs. People donate money for the maintenance of this structure and write lovely notes of their loved ones.

At the base of Buddha in Phuket, there is writing about the project’s history and Buddhist teaching. As a major tourist attraction, the site is accessible through many roads. With 1000 people visit daily on a good, expect to get good crowds around sunset.

Note: As this is a religious site, tourists especially women should dress appropriately before going there. Women wearing bold clothing need to cover up with a sarong before entering the place to avoid hurting religious sentiment.
